2011 Adelaide ANDA Show exclusive – Ram’s Head Dollar A Counterstamp

The Merino ram’s head design has graced the reverse of all of the Royal Australian Mint’s 2011 mintmark, privy mark and counterstamp coins. This same design graced the Australian shilling from 1938 until 1963. The original design by George Kruger Gray was modelled on a grand champion Merino ram from the annual Sydney Sheep show in 1932 which was considered to be unmatched in the position of its head and horns. The ram was named Uardry 0.1 after its home station, however it quickly became known as the ‘Shilling Ram’. The reinstatement of the design is in commemoration of the Australian wool industry and represents Australia’s reliance on primary industry throughout our economic history. This powerful coin design is a unique link between the old pre-decimal currency and the current decimal currency.

This coin with “A” counterstamp was made on our mobile press at the Adelaide Australian Numismatic Dealer Association Show.

The coin will be presented in a cardboard holder with information of the history of the ram’s head design.
