The Royal Australian Mint celebrates ‘90 Years of The Ghan’ with this full-coloured, Uncirculated release. The coin is presented on an informative card featuring an illustration of The Ghan.
Originally built as a narrow-gauge railway and run on the Central Australian Railway to Alice Springs, The Ghan was notorious for delays caused by fires and floods. In October 1980 a new standard-gauge line was built to the west of the original railway line.
Now operated by Great Southern Rail, the journey is a total of 2,979km that takes four days, and three nights, travelling between Adelaide and Darwin. Today the Ghan is considered as one of the world’s great railways and is a tourist destination in its own right.
