This latest Royal Australian Mint 50c coin will not be issued for circulation and features a detailed and dynamic combat scene that brilliantly captures Australian soldiers, a Centurion tank and Iroquois helicopter at the Battle of Long Khanh. A detailed and proudly designed tribute to Australia’s last years in the period-defining Vietnam War!
After nine years of fighting in the increasingly unpopular Vietnam War, Australia was preparing to withdraw. ‘Operation Overlord’ was undertaken after intelligence suggested the North Vietnamese Army was using a buffer zone between the Phuoc Tuy and Long Khanh provinces to train and equip its forces. The most significant fighting took place on June 7 1971 and became known as the ‘Battle of Long Khanh’…
This intense 8-hour battle showed the well-trained Australian troops could overcome difficult odds, defeating the enemy, but ultimately the allies were unable to concentrate enough combat power to achieve a decisive outcome. The North Vietnamese Army successfully evacuated personnel and stores, thus surviving to ‘fight another day’. Operation Overlord ended on 14 June 1971. Subsequently, a phased withdrawal began - culminating in Australia’s complete exit from Vietnam by 1973.
